Morning Time With Preschoolers and Toddlers
When my kids were all little, Morning Time when down like this:
Gather the first-grader, preschooler, and toddler to the kitchen table. They loved Morning Time, so no need to bribe with food!
Sing a few songs, read a picture book together, and work on Scripture Memory work. This might last a total of ten minutes.
School time for the first grader. This typically included phonics or reading, copy work, and math.
During school time, my preschooler and toddler sat with us at the table. To keep them busy, I let the preschooler color or play with homemade play dough; the little guy liked this Purplinker.
Here are ten simple ideas for having Morning Time with young kids.
Pick two or three, that is all!
read a chapter from the Psalms
read a picture book together
read one chapter from a favorite book (for elementary age kids)
pull out a favorite coloring book or craft for the kids to enjoy while you read
sing a song together
choose a verse from Scripture to memorize together
read a poem
look at a children’s art book together
read a history or science lesson together
read from a kids’ devotional
Did you notice how many of those ideas start with the word “read?”
Yes. That’s kind of the point of Morning Time. *wink*
Pam recommends (and I agree)-
Start small.
Maybe one morning a week is where you need to begin, like I did.
Or, if you want to jump straight in with a daily Morning Time, keep it short and sweet.
Starting out, I’d stick with ten minutes or less- from start to finish.
You can always add more ideas and time later on, if you want.
Remember: the point is to simplify your life and add structure; not create “one more thing to do.”
