Sloppy Joes with Ketchup and Mustard—Yes, Please!
This post: the BEST recipe for sloppy joes with ketchup and mustard…. easy peasy style.
It had been one of those days. Not one of those days.
Just one of those DAYS.
One that requires this mama to wear lots of hats,
read lots of books,
listen to lots of little voices,
answers lots and lots of questions,
settle lots and lots of fusses,
clean up lots and lots and lots of messes,
issue lots of reminders,
kiss lots of boo-boo’s
and juggle lots of responsibilities.
Yeah, just one of those days.
A pretty normal day, come to think of it.
And definitely one of those days that calls for a quiet-as-possible-no-fuss-required evening.
It’s still warm right now in Texas, and that calls for minimal cooking in the kitchen; especially at the end of a typical school day like today.
This morning, I popped some organic, grass-fed beef (thank you, Aldi!) into the fridge to thaw… and all day, Sloppy Joe’s have been simmering on my brain.
Tonight, we’re pairing this Sloppy Joe sauce with the gluten-free hamburger buns my husband scored yesterday (again, thank you, Aldi!), a bag of organic tortilla chips, maybe a few organic “baby” carrots and Ranch… and miss Emily’s gluten-free brownies.
A fun variation: open-face Sloppy Joe’s with sprinkles piles of shredded Colby Jack or cheddar cheese on top. 😀
This recipe hails back to my childhood, and the many, tasty meals we enjoyed because of my Mom’s Sloppy Joes with Ketchup and Mustard.
This is my spin on an old favorite.
It’s simple, quick, and calls for minimal cooking… for me, it’s just perfect for One of Those Days.
Recipe: Gluten-free Sloppy Joe Sauce
Summary: A savory spin on an old favorite!
Ingredients
2 pounds ground beef (or, 1 lb ground beef and 1 {15-oz} can pinto beans)
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
sea salt and black pepper (to taste)
chili powder, cumin, onion powder, dash of garlic powder
2 TBSP organic brown sugar
1 TBSP prepared mustard OR dash powdered mustard
1 tsp arrowroot powder or corn starch
Instructions
In a large cast iron skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat, just until the meat is no longer pink.
Add a sprinkle of sea salt, black pepper, onion powder, cumin and chili powder.
Add a full, 15-oz can of tomato sauce (I love Aldi’s organic tomato sauce!).
While sauce heats, stir in additional spices, brown sugar and mustard. I didn’t specify amounts on the herbs and spices, because I always spice according to taste. 🙂
Whisk in arrowroot powder or corn starch to thicken. If you’re using part pinto beans (in place of some of the meat), now is a good time to add those.
Bring sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
Allow sauce to simmer and thicken for about 30 minutes.
Spoon sloppy joe sauce over your choice of buns or bread.
This recipe serves our family of two adults and five kids!
Here’s to living well-
Kristy
