Late summer (September - October) is always a crazy season for getting dressed in Texas.

Mentally, I’m ready for fall. The clothes racks at every department store are laden with sweaters, coats, and cardigans.

The weather? Not so much.

And now that I work outside the home as a hospice chaplain, I’ve had to get a little more creative about transitioning my everyday wardrobe into business-casual outfits… without adding layers I absolutely do not need when it’s still hot outside.

I’ve always leaned toward feminine, timeless pieces, and I’ve learned that I don’t necessarily need a separate work wardrobe. (Fellow minimalists, you can cue the confetti. 🎉)

The Game-Changer—No-Bulk Layers

I learned a long time ago that a simple layer can make a breezy summer piece feel a little more polished and ready for fall—and that’s a game changer!

Enter one of my longtime wardrobe staples: the Halftee.

If you’re not familiar with Halftees, they’re just what they sound like: half a layering cami or tee, worn beneath tops, dresses, sweaters, etc. (Think zero heat and zero bulk).

Halftees are my go-to staple for extending my capsule wardrobe throughout the year, and that’s definitely true of the sometimes tricky summer-to-fall transition.

1. Keep Wearing the Sundress

Just because Hobby Lobby pulled out the Christmas trees and Starbucks is pushing pumpkin spice everything, please don’t rush to pack away your sundresses.

If the weather feels like summer, I wear the summer clothes—tweaked just a bit to honor the autumnal urges I start feeling.

For an end of summer outfit, pairing it with a Halftee instantly changes the feel of the dress—not to mention covers the visible bra straps (a major pet peeve).

I like to wear my leather slides to show off my pedicure as long as I can. But if you want to lean into more autumnal footwear, slip on a pair of Rothy’s in "Maple” or “Russet.” A pair of feminine Western-style boots (like these) is another super chic look to pair with a sundress in late summer.

2. Give Tank Tops a Second Life

Tank tops don’t have to disappear from your wardrobe, either.

One of my favorite tricks is wearing a pretty Halftee underneath a summer tank or low-cut top. This has become especially useful since starting my chaplain job, where my wardrobe needs to be a bit more business and less casual.

I love styling a pretty top/Halftee combo with a pair of wide leg jeans (these are the pair I’m wearing on repeat right now) or a breezy maxi skirt. That’s a late summer outfit that’s perfect for work, brunch, or a date night. 💕

Late summer outfit formula #2:

• tank top or sleeveless blouse + Halftee + wide-leg jeans or maxi skirt + flats or slides

  

3. Fake Sweater Weather

This may be my favorite late summer trick. 😅

Instead of layering a regular shirt underneath a short-sleeve sweater or button-up cardigan, I wear a sleeveless Halftee. I still get the layered look I want, but without adding a full shirt underneath.

It’s a simple way to ease into fall style when the weather hasn’t actually dipped into fall temperatures yet. And once cooler weather finally arrives, I can swap the sleeveless Halftee for a mock turtleneck or full turtleneck style and keep wearing the same basic outfit formula.

Late summer outfit formula #3:

• short-sleeve sweater or button-up cardigan + sleeveless HalfTee + wide-leg jeans + flats or booties

Honestly, I think late summer is one of my favorite seasons to dress for. I get to hang onto the breezy pieces I’ve lived in all summer, while slowly pulling in the richer colors, textures, and layers I love for fall. And I’m not mad about getting another month or two out of my favorite sundresses and tanks, either. 😉

For me, that’s really the beauty of a capsule wardrobe. I don’t want to pack everything away and start over every three months. I want to keep wearing the pieces I love, with a few tricks up my sleeve for making them work throughout the year.

I’m embracing late summer as a season of its own, & finding that this softer mindset eases the transition between summer and fall.

I’m also sitting with this question more and more: “What is bringing me joy, ease, and abundance right now?”

Those three words—joy, ease, and abundance—have become especially meaningful to me lately.

This morning, I sat down with that question and my journal.

Here are eleven things I wrote down:

11 Things Bringing Me Joy, Ease, & Abundance, the Late-Summer Edition

#1 Journaling

I’m no stranger to journaling. I started my first diary when I was ten years old.

But this season finds me living through many transitions—emotionally, vocationally, and in about every way as a woman.

Journaling throughout the week helps calm and sort my thoughts, as well as bring clarity to emotions that often feel overwhelming.

I’m especially enjoying the generous margins of this pretty journal from Amazon. It’s become more of a common place journal than a diary, thanks to the extra space for writing.

#2 Qigong

My homeopath recommended that I give Qigong a try. I did and I’m hooked! These gentle routines are incredibly helpful for relieving stress and tension in my back and shoulders, and I find them calming when I'm feeling stressed or anxious.

I follow Mimi Kuo-Deemer on YouTube, and do her shorter (15-minute) quigong routines at least four or five times a week.

#3 Listening to Podcasts

Right now, I’m listening to Melissa Peters’ podcast, “Traditional Chinese Medicine for Christians” once or twice a week on my drive to work, and “One Extraordinary Marriage” once a week with Jeremy. 🎧

#4 Prioritizing Sleep

More specifically, I’m prioritizing:

• Going to bed by 9 or 10 o’clock on weeknights.

• Going to bed with Jeremy every night (versus one of us staying up later or going to bed earlier).

The perks of this are pretty obvious: I’m getting more rest, which makes a huge difference in my physical and emotional energy during the week.

And Jeremy and I are enjoying the extra time to connect and cuddle at the end of the day—something we’d neglected for far too long after more than 20 years of marriage.

(If you can’t tell, I’m not a fan of the “sleep divorce” trend that’s circulating right now.)

#5 These Essential Oils

I’ve got the following three essential oil blends in my diffuser right now:

#6 Going Back to School

Yes, going to school brings me joy! 📚

After a decade of talking and planning and dreaming about going back for my degree, I finally took the plunge this August. I’m working on finishing up my basics right now, with a specific degree in mind… which I’ll share later.

This semester, I’m taking Art Appreciation, American History 1, and Intro to Psychology. At 45, I’m having the time of my life sitting in a classroom again a few hours a week!

#7 Dating Jeremy

After 24 years of marriage, Jeremy and I are intentionally in a season of rediscovering each other—or more specifically, getting to know who we have become after decades of parenting, ministry, and life.

Jeremy likes to call this season our “second marriage,” which seems fitting. We’ve both grown and changed a lot since we first met in college at 19 and 23 years old.

I’m happy to say that we’re more crazy about each other than ever, which makes dating in our 40s even more exciting than it was in our 20s. 💕

#8 Working

Jeremy and I both love to work, which is good—because we’re both working a lot right now!

(Tell me you’re an Enneagram 1 and 3 couple, without telling me you’re an Enneagrem 1 and 3 couple….)

I’m grateful that the work I do—both as a hospice chaplain and freelance writer— feels meaningful and rewarding.

And after years as a full-time stay-at-home mom, contributing to our family finances in a meaningful way feels really good, too.

#9 Using My New Planner

Jeremy bought me a new planner when I went back to school this fall and I absolutely love it!

This time, I picked the “Pineapple Charm” weekly planner to track my school and work assignments. 🍍

#10 Walking My Treadmill

It’s too hot to walk or jog outdoors in Texas right now! And yes, I’m 100% a fair-weather jogger. 🥵

Last winter, I invested in an at-home DeerRun treadmill and it’s been worth every penny. These days, I hit the treadmill while I’m watching an online psychology lecture—helps me get my steps up while I tackle homework.

#11 These Candles

I’m not quite ready to decorate for fall yet, but I am ready to embrace some of the cozy vibes I look forward to this time of year.

As homeschool moms, we’re already juggling lesson plans, meal planning, laundry, appointments, and about a hundred other responsibilities. The last thing most of us need is another complicated curriculum to manage.

Journey keeps everything organized for you.

After you enroll, each student receives their own login with a personalized dashboard. From there, they can access their weekly video lessons, worksheets, quizzes, exams, and any supplemental materials for the course.

Quizzes and exams are graded automatically. Worksheets include answer keys.

Instead of spending evenings grading papers, I simply check completed work and move on with our day. As a busy homeschool mom, that’s a huge win.

Manageable Reading

One thing I especially appreciate is that Journey doesn’t rely on endless textbook reading.

Yes, students read, but the reading supports the lessons instead of replacing them. Most of the teaching happens through engaging video instruction, making this an excellent fit for visual learners, reluctant readers, and many dyslexic students.

If life got busy, we simply picked up where we left off. That flexibility was especially helpful while homeschooling multiple children at different grade levels.

Although the curriculum looked a little different for each child, one thing surprised me most: Every single one of them enjoyed science.

High School Online Homeschool Science Review

My second daughter, Emily, isn’t what you’d call a “science kid.”

Give her Broadway musicals, theatre, or a cast recording any day of the week, and she’s perfectly happy. But science? Not at the top of her list.

That’s one reason I was pleasantly surprised by how much she enjoyed Journey’s high school astronomy course.

Each week, Emily watched one of Luke Gilkerson’s video lectures (usually around 20 minutes), completed her assigned reading, finished a worksheet, and took an online quiz. Throughout the year, she also completed semester exams and a final exam, earning a full high school science credit.

The workload felt appropriately challenging without taking over her entire schedule.

I especially appreciated that she could complete a solid, college-prep science course while still having plenty of time for the activities she truly loves.

If your high school student isn’t planning to major in science someday, I think that’s a tremendous advantage.

Students who love digging deeper can complete the optional Field Guide activities, which include star-gazing exercises, charts, and additional hands-on learning.

Middle School Online Homeschool Science Review

My son Keith, on the other hand, is naturally curious. He’s also a very social learner.

Whenever possible, I’d sit beside him and watch the weekly science lectures together. (The middle school and high school students watch the same lecture videos.)

On weeks I couldn’t join him, something interesting happened. He’d come find me afterward and start telling me everything he’d learned.

To me, that’s one of the best indicators that a curriculum is working! Kids talk about the things that genuinely interest them.

Keith’s weekly assignments included the lecture, textbook reading, worksheets, an online quiz, and optional Field Guide activities. Since the middle school level includes fewer assignments than the high school course, it doesn’t count as a high school science credit—but it does provide an excellent foundation.

As the mom of a dyslexic learner, I especially appreciated that most of the instruction came through video rather than endless reading. That format played to his strengths instead of constantly highlighting his challenges.

If you’re looking for an online homeschool science curriculum for a visual or auditory learner—especially a reluctant reader—I think Journey does an exceptional job.

Elementary Online Homeschool Science Review

My younger boys, Colton and Caleb, completed the elementary Experience Astronomy course together. This may have been my favorite part of the entire year.

The elementary lessons are shorter than the middle school and high school videos, making them a perfect fit for younger attention spans.

Most weeks we’d watch one or two lessons together, complete Colton’s workbook assignments, and then spend the rest of the week talking about planets, stars, and whatever fascinating fact we’d just learned.

Science stopped feeling like another homeschool subject and became part of everyday conversation.

One of my favorite memories? Caleb asked if he could watch two of Mr. Luke’s science videos for his birthday. I don’t think I could give a stronger recommendation than that!

The boys also spent months pretending to be astronauts, wearing their science T-shirts, and quizzing each other with the astronomy memory cards. When learning naturally spills over into play, I know we’ve found something special.

Teaching Younger Siblings Alongside Older Students

One question I hear often is whether younger siblings can participate. Absolutely.

Here’s what worked beautifully for our family.

Let each child participate at his or her own level.

Colton completed the workbook assignments each week.

Caleb simply watched the lessons.

Because he wasn’t yet a confident reader and writer, I chose not to purchase a workbook for him. He still learned an incredible amount just by watching and listening.

Don’t skip the memory cards.

If I were recommending one optional add-on, this would be it.

The memory cards became one of our favorite ways to review each lesson, and all of the kids could participate together.

Borrow the recommended picture books.

Journey includes wonderful book recommendations that correspond with the weekly lessons.

We borrowed many of ours from the library, then purchased a few favorites to keep on our shelves. Those extra read-alouds helped reinforce what the boys were learning without adding much work for me.

Who I Think This Curriculum Is Best For

After using Journey Homeschool Academy with all five of my kids, here’s who I think will benefit most.

This curriculum is an excellent fit if you:

• homeschool multiple children

• want an online homeschool science curriculum that teaches for you

• prefer a Christian worldview

• have visual or auditory learners

• want very little lesson planning

• appreciate automatic grading

It may not be the best fit if your ideal science curriculum revolves around daily hands-on experiments or discussion-based learning with very little screen time.

For our family, however, it has been one of the easiest—and most enjoyable—curriculum decisions we’ve made.

The tension hung in the air.

We were getting ready to take our kids to an indoor water park, and my husband, Jeremy, was surprised to find me in the bathroom putting on makeup.

Not that I mind! I LOVE traveling. 

But like most things, there are some unique angles I have as an INTJ female (aka, highly introverted woman).  

How to minimize overwhelm, over-stimulation, and anxiety are a few of the things that come to mind when I think about travel tips for introverts.

If you’re a fellow introvert, I know there’s no need to explain.

Here are 5 tips for making introvert travel enjoyable:

Introvert Travel Tip 1:  Travel in off-seasons

This isn’t always possible with work and school schedules, but it’s more possible if you work from home and/or homeschool. 

My friend, who is a pilot’s wife, recommends October, the week between Christmas and New Year, and January as ideal travel times. 

Tip 2: Avoid high-tourist attractions

I confess: there are some famous destinations I have no desire to see simply because of the throngs of people. Hawaii was on that list for me for years! 

Like I said, our oldest daughter is stationed in Hawaii, so I’ve visited the islands several times. (Check out my top non-touristy places to see in Oahu.)

As an introvert, I have a bit of a super power when it comes to avoiding high-tourist areas… even in high tourist areas. 

Introvert Travel Tip 3: Stay in a VRBO 

This tip has saved both my husband (who is also an introvert) and me so much money and sanity over the years! A huge perk is that our kids absolutely love staying in a house vs. a hotel, and it’s simply more relaxing for a family trip or vacation.  

We like this option as opposed to: staying in a busy hotel or resort, or even staying with family members. Which leads me to the next tip… 

Tip 4: Say “no” if you need to

Jeremy and I have learned to politely decline some things when it comes to traveling. As introverts, we don’t love piling up in cramped spaces with family. (We love you, Mom and Dad, but sorry.) And invitations to take road trips with extended family or even close friends will typically get a “no” from us, too. It’s just feels extra exhausting.

Tip 5: Think local

The idea of “staycations” sort of made a comeback since the Pandemic, but we’ve liked the idea for about two decades. One of our first summers as newly weds found Jeremy and I broke, but wanting to do something fun. Instead of traveling, we decided to explore the little town we had recently moved to. That summer, we discovered interesting museums, parks and lakes, quaint shops, and had the best time–without spending more than a few dollars! 

The next time you feel a bit of wander lust but don’t have money to travel, ask yourself what hidden gems you might be overlooking in your own town, county, or state. 

Bonus Tip: Support Your Nervous System

7 Non-Touristy Things to Do in Oahu

In this post, I’m sharing my top non-touristy things to do in Oahu.

Most have affordable or even free options, are family-friendly, and will give you a taste of the rich culture, history, and natural beauty of the Hawaiian Island.

1) Climb the Pill Box Hike

The Lanikai Pillbox Trail, located on the east side of Oahu island, is definitely worth the climb! At just under a mile (round trip), the hike is fairly short.

But it is a climb, so keep that in mind if you have young children or any health difficulties. (And please wear supportive shoes, like hiking boots or running shoes.)

What sets this hike apart from other island trails are the pillboxes at the top, a remnant from the island’s World War II days. If you feel up to it after your ascent, scamper up one of the pillboxes for an extra amazing view of Lanikai Beach!

2) Visit the Hawaiian Mission House

The Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic State Site is a hidden jewel my husband and I discovered on our first visit to Oahu. The mission houses are located in historic downtown Honolulu (more on that below), and provide a little-known glimpse into the extraordinary history of the islands.

The Hawaiian Mission House is open weekly, Tuesday – Saturday. Tours include a free, self-guided or a paid option.

3) Walk Historic Downtown Honolulu

For my history-loving friends, a walk through historic downtown Honolulu is a unique treat! Framed by the unforgettable beauty of the islands, Hawaii’s rich history and culture comes to life as you explore many of the island’s little-known but most-see gems.

Here are just a few of the sites to experience in historic downtown Honolulu:

• Iolani Palace (more details below)

• Kawaiahaʻo Church (the first Christian chapel on the Hawaiian Islands) 

• Many more historic churches (most are open for self-guided tours)

• Washington Place (the governor’s mansion, tours must be booked in advance)

• Hawaii State Capitol (free admission)

• King Kamehameha I Statue ( a short walk from historic Kawaiahaʻo Church and the State Capitol)

• Hawaii State Art Museum (located on Richards Street)

• Chinatown (on the western side of Honolulu’s financial district in Downtown Honolulu)

• Foster Botanic Gardens (adult admission is $5, children 6 – 12 get in for $1, admission for kids under 5 is free)

Most of the sites in historic downtown Honolulu are within blocks of each other, which makes it easy to enjoy on foot. Download a free map, with 25 top historic sites for a self-guided tour, here.

4) Take the ʻIolani Palace Self-Guided Tour

The beautiful Ionani Palace is nestled in historic downtown Honolulu, and is probably one of my favorite places for exploring the unique cultural history of the Hawaiian Islands.

There are numerous tour options to choose from, but none of them are free. It’s also important to note that all tour tickets must be purchased in advance online; there are no walk-in tour options.

My husband and I enjoyed the ‘Iolani Palace self-guided tour, which is a 60-minute audio tour through the main floors of the palace.

5) Visit Pearl Harbor for Free

Visiting Pearl Harbor was top on my list of things to do in Hawaii. I’m lucky enough to have visited the memorial park twice, and I’ll go again if I ever get the chance.

While there are some historic tours you can purchase (and I’m sure they’re worth every penny), you can also visit Pearl Harbor for FREE if you want to.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to visit Pearl Harbor for free:

• The park is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

• You’ll have to park a ways out and walk

• You CANNOT take a purse, backpack, or any type of bag inside the park (lockers are available to rent)

• There’s lots of walking and limited shade, so wear a hat and sunscreen

• The last shuttle to the U.S. Arizona leaves at 3:00 p.m.

• Audio guides are available at many sites

• A free, 23-minute film about the Pearl Harbor attack is available to watch

• If you give yourself a free, self-guided tour through Pearl Harbor, plan to spend at least 75 to 90 minutes at the park (paid tours can last up to eight hours)

6) Picnic or Walk in Wahiawa Botanical Garden

I discovered the Wahiawa Botanic Garden on my last trip to Oahu, when my daughter and her fiance chose it as the spot for their engagement photo shoot.

This botanic garden is known as “the tropic jewel” on Oahu island, and I couldn’t agree more! The 27-acre garden dates back to the 1930s, when the land was used by sugar planters as an experimental arboretum. A trek through the winding pathways feels like exploring a hidden, tropical rain forest!  

If you plan to visit the Wahiawa Botanical Garden with young children, keep in mind that some of the walking trails are steep. If you have strollers or toddlers, you’ll want to stay on the main walking paths.

Admission to the Wahiawa Botanical Garden is free (you simply park and walk in). It’s the perfect place to picnic (there’s so much shade!), take a family vacation photo shoot, or enjoy a non-strenuous hike through the island’s beautiful vegetation.

7) Explore North Shore Waimea Bay

North Shore Waimea Bay will always have a special place in my heart, as it’s the site where my husband performed the marriage for our daughter and son-in-law

There are reasons our introverted daughter chose this lovely, less-touristy spot as the location for her private beach wedding:

• It’s considerably less crowded than Waikiki Beach

• The parking is easier than other more touristy spots

• The atmosphere is generally more relaxed and mild

If you visit North Shore Waimea Bay during the winter months, you’ll likely get to watch surfing competitions. During the summer months, the bay provides a relaxing, semiprivate spot for families or couples to enjoy swimming, picnics, and leisurely hikes along the beach.

Tip: To avoid even more of the tourist crowds, arrive at North Shore Waimea Bay before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

These are some of my favorite non-touristy things to do in Oahu.

1) Have 20 Minutes of Daily Quiet Time

In her book, The Introverted Mom: Your Guide to More Calm, Less Guilt, and More Joy, Jamie C. Martin touts the health benefits of having just 20 minutes of quiet time every day.

At first, I RESISTED this idea. I mean, how can lying around for nearly half-an-hour every day help me feel better as a mom? (I have things to do!)

After giving this a try for just a few days, I was convinced.

For maximum benefits, make sure you:

• darken the room

• turn off your phone & devices

• rest quietly (without interruptions, if possible)

• close your eyes – no reading or browsing books/social media

This daily habit can help bring your body’s adrenaline levels back to normal during a busy day, & reset your perspective.

Mom Tip:

When my kids were little, resting for 20 minutes while my kids napped was the best way to fit in this self care habit.

I’ve noticed that even if I don’t fall asleep (I’m not great at power napping), I feel more refreshed if I take the time to do this every day.

2) Tell Yourself What to think

Better yet, write it down.

Dr. Daniel Amen encourages a practice he calls “the one page miracle,” in which you fill a single page with your answers to the following two questions:

1. What do I want?

2. How am I going to make it happen?

In summary, “telling yourself what to think” is the opposite of letting old patterns dictate your daily choices & moods. Spend a few minutes every day getting intentional about improving your thought patterns.

Think about it: The first environment God created for humans was a garden.

We were designed to thrive emotionally, physically, spiritually, & mentally when we have ample time in “green” & “blue” spaces — that is, nature, gardens, water, etc.

In the article “Nurtured by Nature,” The American Psychological Association, spells out numerous potential benefits of spending time outdoors, including:

• decreased rates of mental & emotional disorders in children

• sharpened cognitive benefits

• increased feelings of optimism & positivity

• decreased mental stress

• ability to problem solve

Tips for Getting Outdoors as a Busy Mom

1. Make time for a morning or evening walk

2. Take your kids to a local park

3. Take your kids on a nature walk

4. Pack a family picnic

5. Plant flowers, herbs, or a few vegetables

I love a professional mani pedi. In fact, nothing is quite as relaxing for me as an afternoon spent in a spa, getting my nails done while I sit in a chair + do absolutely nothing.

Unfortunately, a day at the spa doesn’t often work for me. Here in Fort Worth, a basic mani pedi costs about $75 + means sitting in a salon for at least two hours. If you want to upgrade to a nail salon that uses eco friendly nail polish, you can count on spending even more money.

The Most Affordable Mani Pedi…

Of course, the most affordable mani pedi is the one you do yourself, right?

I crunched the numbers for giving myself a non toxic mani pedi, using quick drying, eco friendly nail polish. Did you know you can do an at home mani pedi for about $25 – $40, depending what you products already have on hand?

The really good news? Once you buy a few products, you’ve set yourself up for FREE mani pedis + a relaxing DIY self care routine.

Eco Friendly Nail Polish That Actually Works

When I decided to take the plunge and try an at home mani pedi, I knew I wanted to use an eco friendly nail polish. Unfortunately, finding something that gave consistent results turned out to be harder than I thought.

I tried lots of different non toxic nail polish brands + most of them were runny, hard to apply smoothly, took forever to dry, or chipped/peeled right away.

After lots of trial + error, I landed on Mineral Fusion – a “clean” makeup brand that offers a huge line of beautiful, eco friendly nail polish colors. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautifully my at home manicures turned out with this polish! It goes on smoothly, doesn’t streak, isn’t runny or too thick, has very low odor, dries quickly, and lasts about a week without chipping. I was sold!

These days, I typically always give myself a mani pedi at home. It isn’t nearly as complicated as I used to think, and my nails always turn out exactly how I want – without the extra time, money, and chemicals.

Here Are 5 Easy Steps to Giving Yourself a Non Toxic Mani Pedi at Home

Tip: Turn on a podcast, movie, or playlist while you do your nails!

1) Soak Your Hands + Feet

I used to skip this part because I was in a hurry, but that defeats the purpose of getting a mani pedi – which is to relax! I’ve also noticed that my at home mani pedis turn out so much better when I take the time to soak my hands + feet first.

So fill a tub with hot water + a squirt of Dr Teal’s Rose Foaming Bath Milk, and start soaking!

I love Dr. Teal’s Bath Milk + can’t recommend it enough. It’s affordable, easy to find at Walmart or on Amazon, and will elevate your mani pedi experience considerably.

2) Take Care of Your Heels

I don’t know about you, but I wear sandals + slides a lot during the summer + my feet can get pretty rough. To keep your feet pretty, gently scrub your heels with a pumice rock once your feet have soaked a bit in the warm water.

Scrub just enough to soften + smooth your skin. If you haven’t had a pedi in a while + your feet are calloused, it might take a few times to soften them up. Don’t over do it!

Budget tip: Don’t spend more than $2 on a pumice stone. I like this set from Amazon.

3) Clean Your Nails Really Well

Once you’ve soaked + scrubbed your skin, it’s time to focus on your nails. Clean, buffed nails will polish better, so take some time with this step.

First of all, remove any old polish from your finger nails + toe nails. This is where I fall off the non toxic wagon. Sadly, I’ve yet to find an eco friendly nail polish remover that actually works. Right now, I use this acetone polish remover, which is cheap + easy to find. It effectively removes just about any type of nail polish.

Pat your clean hands + feet dry.

4) Trim + Shape Your Nails

Now it’s time to finishing setting your nails up for a beautiful mani or pedi. Don’t skip this step!

Once your nails are clean, use a good pair of clippers to gently trim them to your desired length. Think about the shape you want – straight across, or slightly rounded? Then trim accordingly. File to perfect the shape + smooth out any rough edges.

Now use an orange stick or similar tool to gently push your cuticles. Trim any “hang nails.”

Apply a moisturizing lotion, if you like, and a bit of coconut oil to the beds of your nails.

5) Polish + Dry

Now it’s time to polish! (I typically start with my feet, then while my toe nails are drying I give myself a manicure.)

Lay out your nail polish for easy access. If you’re using an eco friendly nail polish brand like Mineral Fusion, you shouldn’t have to worry about odors; but it’s probably a wise idea to make sure you’ve got good ventilation.

Start with a base coat (try this one from Mineral Fusion.) I find that polish sticks better + lasts longer when I take the time to use a base coat.

Apply polish. It took me many, many attempts to master the art of putting on nail polish! What works best for me is to place the polish wand just above the beds of my nails, and use upward strokes. This avoids streaking + generally goes on smoothly. If you’re using a good quality eco friendly nail polish, two coats should do the trick.

End with a gel top coat. A quick drying polish should be ready for the top coat within seconds, but give it a minute or two to dry if it still looks a bit sticky. Once the polish has “set” sufficiently, apply a single, smooth coat of gel top coat. This step really “seals” your polish, gives it a professional, glossy look, and will help your mani pedis last longer.

Using the products + brands mentioned in this tutorial, my manis last about a week, and pedis last a few weeks.

What I Look for in Swimwear

I’ve given birth to five babies, I’m in my early 40s, + I have very light skin – so going for full coverage swimwear isn’t just about modesty for me. My body deserves a bit of support + safe, flattering coverage. And by “full coverage” I don’t mean collar bone-to-wrist-to-knees.

Here are five things I look for in swimwear:

• beautiful prints + flattering styles

• coverage for shoulders (mine burn so easily in the sun)

• support + coverage for boobs

• cuts that slim my waist + tummy

• enough fabric to cover my bottom

Style experts tell us that halter neck dresses are perfectly suitable for relaxed occasions – like outdoor picnics + barbeques, birthday parties, or a girls’ night out.

I recently took the plunge + purchased a floral halter neck dress from Amazon… and fell madly in love with it. This style is definitely a keeper for me! If you’re still on the line, let me give you a gentle nudge.

Here are three super easy tips on how to wear a halter neck dress…

And absolutely feel like a queen.

Tip #1: Invest in a strapless bra.

If you’re going for the feminine, queenly look, then this step is a must. I happen to agree with the old-school fashion experts: showing bra straps just looks tacky.

The easy solution is to simply wear a strapless bra. (I love my strapless bra from Third Love, and highly recommend this brand.)

If you feel a bit self-conscious about your shoulders or arms – or if you simply want more coverage – you can always layer. Below are two ideas for how to wear a halter neck dress with layers.

Layer beneath your dress.

Choose a tight fitting cami or dressier tee for this option.

I’m personally a huge fan of Halftees, and styled my dress with the “blush pink” Boyfriend Halftee (pictured below). A big perk of wearing a Halftee instead of a traditional cami is there is zero bulk – Halftees are only half a tee, and they just come down long enough to cover your bra. Layer over your dress.

This is a lovely option if you’ll be wearing your halter neck dress indoors, or in a climate with chilly weather.

To avoid looking frumpy or bulky, choose a cropped, well-fitting jacket – the denim jacket pictured below is my go to layer to wear over dresses.

Tip #2: Go minimalist with your jewelry.

I tried a statement necklace with this outfit + it felt like too much. With this particular dress, the print is pretty bold + the bodice is smocked – both are “statement makers,” in their own right. And then there’s the beautiful, flattering halter neckline + tie…

So I went with a subtle, feminine look: fresh water pearl studs, a Style Dots bracelet, + a dainty diamond necklace my husband bought me in Hawaii a few years ago.

It felt perfect.

P.S. If you are a jewelry maximalist – go for it, girl.

Tip #3: Sweep your hair into an updo.

Nothing is quite so queenly as sweeping your beautiful mane up + away from your face + neck. The practical benefit of this: you’ll feel so much more cool in hot weather!

The feminine benefit of wearing your hair up with a halter neck dress is that you can show off that gorgeous tie at the nap of your neck!

But what is raw, unrefined coconut oil?

The term “virgin coconut oil” (or VCO) refers to the process by which the oil is harvested and refined – or, in this case, unrefined. Simply put, virgin coconut oil is pure, cold–pressed coconut oil that has not been refined.

Benefits of raw, unrefined coconut oil – versus refined coconut oil – include:

• better taste + aroma (refined coconut oil is better for frying, since it has no taste)

• VCO contains high amounts of vitamin E (which makes it ideal for skin + hair)

• high in antioxidants

• rich in medium chain fatty acids

Virgin coconut oil is a life-giving source of nutrients, especially for us ladies.

How to Take Coconut Oil as a Supplement

My naturopath recommends two to three tablespoons of organic coconut oil as a daily dose for an adult (less for a child).

I’ve taken coconut oil directly off a spoon, but the oily texture is hard for me to get down. Blending it in a smoothie, or melting a tablespoon or two into a cup of hot tea, is more to my liking.

You can generally find coconut oil in any major super market, but be on the look out for virgin, organic, cold-pressed oils. This simply means that the growing and refining processes are going to deliver the highest nutritional quality in the product you buy.

Raw, Unrefined Coconut Oil Health Benefits

Let’s look at ten little known health benefits of raw, unrefined coconut oil.

I gleaned the following information, and more, from the book, Virgin Coconut Oil: How it Has Changed People’s Lives, and How it Can Change Yours.

1. Coconut oil can raise the body’s metabolism and enable weight loss.

Can we all say, Hallelujah?!

In the past, many of us fell for the “low fat” diet fad (I know I did.) But both science and nutrition now tell us a different story.

The truth is, when we starve the body of good fats (and coconut oil is a good fat), we inhibit the body’s ability to absorb key vitamins (like A, D, E and K), maintain a proper metabolic balance, and use up fat instead of storing it.

Polyunsaturated fats (like vegetable oils and margarine) actually promote weight gain. I don’t know about you, but I’m not interested in my body storing fat!

One of the great benefits of raw, unrefined coconut oil is that it is nature’s richest source of medium chain fatty acids/triglycerides (also known as MCTs). Researchers have discovered that MCTs are used by the body for energy and burn up quickly (think, bye-bye calories and fat), unlike the polyunsaturated fats that are stored by the body.

Research also points to the fact the regular consumption of raw, unrefined coconut oil can reduce food cravings, boost energy levels, and help trim abdominal fat.

2. Coconut oil can enrich breast milk.

Breastfeeding was hard for me, and my babies tended to be small- so this was good news to me as a young mom.

The MCTs (remember those medium chain fatty acids, the good fats?) found in raw, unrefined coconut oil are similar to fats found in breast milk, and have similar nutriceutical effects.

Consumption of virgin coconut oil can enrich breast milk by boosting its fat, or lipid, content.

Health benefits for nursing babies can include

• improved weight gain in low weight babies

• increased brain development

• -a stronger immunity

3. Coconut oil is a powerful natural antiobiotic.

Today, many strains of bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, and antibiotics are generally ineffective in treating viral infections.

The good news is, the antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties of MCTs found in coconut oil are super powerful against sickness and infection (researchers have known this since the 1960s).

Outside of a human mother’s breast milk, coconut oil is nature’s most abundant source of lauric acid and MCTs.

When lauric acid is consumed in the diet, it forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin, which has been shown to destroy bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Our family has personally used organic, raw, unrefined coconut oil as a natural antibiotic with good results.

4. Coconut oil has a substantial effect on blood sugar levels.

This is great news if you struggle with hypoglycemia or diabetes.

Coconut oil helps control blood sugar and improves the secretion of insulin.

It also promotes the effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and/or treating diabetes.

For some, coconut oil seems to have a direct effect on blood sugar levels. Others may experience a reduced craving of foods that spike blood sugar levels.

Either way, reports are in favor of coconut oil as a big blessing to people with blood sugar issues.

Studies carried out in nations like India and the South Pacific Islands (where virgin coconut oil is traditionally consumed in high quantities) have shown an increased rate of diabetes (and other western diseases) when highly processed, polyunsaturated vegetable oils become common place in the diet.

5. Coconut Oil Fights Candida (yeast)

3. Eliminate sugar and simple carbs (while breads, pastas, etc) as much as possible.

4. Once your system is used to the coconut oil, begin the 15-day Fungal Defense supplement from Garden of Life.

5. Follow up with Primal Defense supplementation at maximum dosage for at least six months.

I’ve personally battled Candida and can attest to the fact that coconut oil is a powerful weapon against yeast.

6. Coconut oil may help prevent osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, and women are four times more likely to get it than men.

Some benefits of daily oil pulling may include:

• Reduction of bad breath

• Improvement of dry mouth
